The players will be part of the 45 aspiring footballers that will be taken to a training programme under the watchful eye of Neil Tovey and Phil Masinga next year.
“The Castle Lager Football academy scouts have identified 20 talented players from this year’s Varsity Football tournament who may end up being selected to play for NFD or PSL teams. These players will form part of the 45 footballers who will be taken through a three day training program by Neil Tovey and Phil Masinga early next year.
“The finalists from the selection process will form the Castle Lager Superstars, which will play a number of friendly matches against professional teams.
“Varsity football was this year included as another scouting pathway component in the third season of the Castle Lager Football Academy. For the past two months, the Castle Lager football academy scouts have been attending Varsity Football matches, searching for talent.
“From the 20 players, four have been selected from UJ, two from Tuks, six from North West University Mafikeng, four from University of Free State, two from University of Cape Town and two from University of Limpopo. Both UJ and UP – Tuks have had a great run in the 2014 edition of the tournament. UJ went on a seven-match unbeaten run to finish at the top of the log standings before beating UFS Kovsies in the semi-finals to reach the final in their debut season. UP – Tuks defeated NWU Mafikeng 5-4 in a penalty during their semi-final match,”
“Overall the football was exciting with teams going all out and scoring lots of goals. The defending could have been much better though. The players that we have identified are mostly midfielders, but overall some good talent was discovered and will add some additional quality to our final 45,” said Thomas Nare, Castle Lager Football Academy scout.
The Castle Lager Football Academy coaches will continue with the scouting process when the 2014/15 SAB league takes off in October.
