Planting the Seeds of Future Stars: The Inaugural VW Vaya Cup Development Tournament in Stellenbosch

April, 2025

Over the month of April, something powerful happened in the Cape Winelands.

Fields in Stellenbosch were brought to life as football boots hit the grass, parents filled the sidelines, and community spirit came alive – all thanks to the first-ever VW Vaya Cup Development Tournament, a collaboration between Volkswagen, Forwardzone and the local football community.

Traditionally held in Gauteng, the VW Vaya Cup has become a standout fixture on the youth football calendar, only happening once every two years – the kind of tournament every young player dreams of being part of. But this year, that dream reached further.

For the first time, the tournament expanded its footprint, offering kids from historically underserved areas like Franschhoek, Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Jamestown, Idasvallei, and Weltevrede the chance to compete, be seen, and believe – creating opportunity where it’s needed most.

Over the course of the weekend, eight spirited teams took to the pitch. The result? 18 promising young players were selected – handpicked by none other than Banyana Banyana head coach, Desiree Ellis — to represent the region at this weekend’s VW Vaya Cup in Dinokeng.

As Desiree put it: “This is such a big part of development, especially in grassroots football. There’s been some really exciting football, and so many players raising their hands.”

“Most clubs in these regions are community clubs,” one local coach shared. “But when you see parents taking time off work, showing up in the stands – that support fuels these kids. You can see it in their faces.” And perhaps most importantly, this event brought back visibility and credibility to a region with a deep footballing history.

“It’s a major boost,” said local football leader. “This tournament puts us back on the map. And more importantly, it shows these kids that their dreams are possible.”

Volkswagen’s vision has always gone beyond the game. The brand continues to invest in the full development of young people – on and off the field.

“We’re not just preparing footballers — we’re preparing holistic individuals.” “And this tournament is proof that development starts somewhere. One day, we’ll look back and say: ‘This is where it all began,’” said Coach Desiree Ellis.

This weekend, those 18 boys will travel to Dinokeng for the main VW Vaya Cup – others from around the country, and while the scoreboards will track goals and wins, the real victory has already happened: access was given, talent was uncovered, and hope was restored.

A special thank you goes to Volkswagen, Global United, and the broader Stellenbosch footballing community for making this a reality.
