It has been a decade of exhilarating matches, fierce rivalries, and deep passion for The Discovery Alex Schools League, with yesterday concluding the finals for 2024, at The Altrec Sports Stadium, Alexandra.
The competition hosts 12 schools over an eight-week period, where both boysโ and girlsโ teams display their skills in competing for the title of being crowned champions. The league, sponsored by Discovery forms part of the Discovery Johannesburg Primary Schools Soccer Programme, with this specific league bringing opportunities to those who may not have otherwise. The league encourages community engagement and healthier living, aligning with the core purpose of the Discovery brand.
It is with thanks to the City of Joburg, the local district and the national departments of basic education and sports, and all partners involved in ensuring this concept is brought to life year after year.
Another mention of thanks goes to the Discovery Ambassador, where this year we were graced with the one and only, Lucas Rabede aka โThe Chief.โ Radebe continues to be a pivotal part of the game and a role model many look up to. His passion for grassroots football is inspiring and his words of encouragement are appreciated by all attendees on the day. Radebe congratulated the teams on a well-fought race to the top, handing over the trophies and medals to the top teams and talent of the day., a humbling and inspiring experience for all.
This yearโs champions played with their hearts and pride on their sleeves as they represented their respective schools, with Zenzeleni Primary School being crowned champions in the girlsโ division and Dr Knack Primary School being crowned champions in the boysโ division of the tournament.
The passion and sportsmanship on and off the field constantly remind us that sport is more than a game, it is the heart of our nation and with the backing of dedicated brands like Discovery, we can only continue to see the bright future of South Africa.
We are still in awe of how the day went down, leaving everyone with a smile on their face, a buzz in the air, a warmth in their heart, and a sense of hope and inspiration and we cannot wait for the next.
