The Discovery Boys Festival returned to the University of Johannesburg from 13–15 May 2026, bringing together some of Johannesburg’s most promising young football talent for three days of competition, development, and talent identification.
As one of the most important fixtures on the Johannesburg primary schools football calendar, the festival provides aspiring players with a unique platform to showcase their abilities in front of selectors and earn the opportunity to represent Johannesburg at the prestigious Bill Stewart Tournament later in the year.
Throughout the festival, players were assessed by selectors from the Johannesburg Primary Schools Football Association (JPSFA), with evaluations focusing on technical ability, tactical understanding, decision-making, teamwork, attitude, and overall potential.
The 2026 edition marked another significant milestone for the programme, with participation growing to 138 schools — an increase of 25 schools from the previous year. From this extensive talent pool, 13 representative squads were selected, with 45 players ultimately earning the honour of representing Johannesburg.
A standout feature of the festival was the continued inclusion of the Under-12 Development Squad. Introduced in 2025, the initiative entered its second year in 2026 and remains an important pathway for identifying and nurturing emerging talent at an earlier age. The programme provides young players with valuable exposure and development opportunities, helping to build a stronger pipeline for the future of Johannesburg football.
