The Discovery Girls Festival took place on 30 May 2026 at its new host venue, Rivonia Primary School, bringing together some of Johannesburg’s most promising young female footballers for a day of competition, development, and talent identification.
As a key platform within the Johannesburg primary schools football pathway, the festival provides young players with the opportunity to showcase their abilities while competing alongside and against some of the city’s top emerging talent. It also serves as an important stepping stone for players aspiring to represent Johannesburg at higher levels of the game.
The 2026 edition saw participation from 121 schools across Johannesburg, reflecting the continued growth and increasing popularity of girls’ football at primary school level. Following a comprehensive selection process, 10 representative teams were chosen to compete in the festival, providing players with valuable exposure and development opportunities.
Throughout the event, selectors from the Johannesburg Primary Schools Football Association (JPSFA) assessed players across a range of criteria, including technical ability, game understanding, teamwork, attitude, adaptability, and overall potential. Particular emphasis was placed on how players performed within newly formed teams, highlighting their ability to communicate, collaborate, and thrive in unfamiliar environments.
At the conclusion of the festival, 30 players were selected to represent Johannesburg at the prestigious Fran Hilton-Smith Tournament in August 2026. The tournament provides an important platform for continued development and exposure, allowing young athletes to compete against leading talent from across the region.
Beyond the action on the field, the festival celebrated the vibrant community that supports the growth of girls’ football. Parents, families, coaches, and supporters created an encouraging and energetic atmosphere throughout the day, reinforcing the positive impact sport can have on young athletes. A fun-filled parent dance-off brought the event to a memorable close, further showcasing the spirit and sense of community that defines the festival.
