Football for Everyone: Lucas Radebe x LUFC x Sunshine & Smiles

March, 2026

In the world of elite sport, it’s often the moments away from the spotlight that leave the greatest impact. During a recent UK trip in March, Forwardzone Group had the privilege of witnessing exactly that, as Lucas Radebe joined a powerful community initiative led by Leeds United Foundation in partnership with Sunshine & Smiles.

Timed around World Down Syndrome Day, the session served as a meaningful reminder of football’s ability to unite, uplift, and create inclusive environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

The Leeds United Foundation continues to set the benchmark for community-driven impact, using football as a vehicle to promote health, well-being, education, and social inclusion. Their ongoing work with Sunshine & Smiles – a Leeds-based charity supporting over 180 families of children and young people with Down syndrome – is a standout example of this commitment in action.

These tailored coaching sessions provide a safe and supportive environment where participants can develop both physically and socially. Led by experienced coaches, the sessions prioritise enjoyment, confidence-building, and connection, ensuring that every individual feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

Beyond the pitch, Sunshine & Smiles plays a vital role in the local community, offering holistic support to families and creating opportunities such as their café, 21 Co., which provides meaningful employment for individuals with Down syndrome.

The Power of Presence

For Lucas Radebe, a long-standing ambassador of the club and a global football icon, being part of these sessions goes beyond symbolic support.

His presence on the pitch – engaging with participants, sharing moments of encouragement, and simply being present – added a layer of inspiration that resonated deeply with everyone involved. It reinforced a powerful message: football belongs to everyone.

For Forwardzone, moments like these align closely with the agency’s broader philosophy – that sport, when leveraged with purpose, has the ability to drive meaningful social change.

From the energy on the pitch to the smiles off it, the session captured what true impact looks like. It wasn’t about performance or results, but about creating moments of joy, confidence, and belonging.

The Leeds United Foundation’s work continues to demonstrate how clubs can extend their influence far beyond matchday, embedding themselves within communities and using their platforms to make a lasting difference.

As World Down Syndrome Day reminds us each year, inclusion is not an initiative – it’s a responsibility. And through programmes like these, football continues to prove that it can be a game for all.
