Charlie Gibson, Forwardzone Athlete and a young footballer from Brisbane, Australia, had always dreamed of broadening her horizons in the beautiful game. When the opportunity arose to train abroad, she jumped at the chance, setting her sights on Portugal and the renowned Valadares Gaia Futebol Clube. Known for its progressive approach to women’s football, Valadares offered an ideal setting for Charlie to deepen her tactical understanding and refine her skills.
Upon her arrival in Portugal, Charlie quickly settled into her new surroundings, eager to immerse herself in the experience. Charlie was able to train with multiple teams within the club including the u19’s, B team, and 1st team. Across the club all of the coaching staff were very knowledgeable and passionate about football. “It was great to get their feedback throughout the sessions as they all brought something different to the game,” said Gibson.
The teammates she trained with across all teams were very welcoming and friendly as they did their best to make her feel a part of their team(s). Whether it was translating the coach’s instructions, getting to know each other and telling them all about Australia, or learning everything Charlie could about the club and Portugal – the teammates were there.
The sessions across all teams were well thought out and had a team objective behind them. As Charlie moved up the teams the quality and speed increased in training which was a good environment to see where she was in her own game. Training with the women’s division of Club Valadares was transformative.
As the days turned into weeks, she found herself not only improving her technical abilities but also developing a deeper appreciation for the game’s tactical nuances. The emphasis on playing out from the back, fluid formations, and positional awareness became second nature. Charlie learned to adapt her style, embracing new concepts and strategies that would enhance her performance both in Portugal and upon her return to Australia.
Training in such a different environment was invaluable. Charlie recognized the importance of experiencing various playing styles and cultural approaches to football.
Moreover, Charlie was able to try local food and coffee from many places, ultimately finding some personal favourites throughout her stay. Most mornings she walked or ran through the town or along the beach to absorb all the scenery and shops around. “Porto and all the towns I visited were all uniquely beautiful with so much character to them,” – Gibson.

Young athletes not only enhance their skills but also gain a deeper understanding of the global nature of football, by experiencing different cultures and styles of play.
Overall I am very grateful to have gone to Portugal and train with Valadares, it was a great training environment and I will take many memories and teachings from the training’s and living in Espinho – Gibson.
Onto the next task for Charlie Gibson! And 2025 looking exciting.
