Lay’s announced a new global initiative, Lay’s RePlay, on the 24th of June 2021 that will see the opening of up to five Lay’s RePlay football pitches around the world in 2021, with the first pitch being unveiled in Tembisa, South Africa.
Lay’s RePlay pitches are designed to maximize social value, while minimizing environmental impact from utilising empty Lay’s chip packets, collected from local waste and recycling partnerships to form the underlayer beneath the turf (called the Ecocept) to ensuring that both the turf and Ecocept layer are 100% recyclable at the end of their life span.
Lay’s united with the UEFA Foundation for Children, streetfootballworld and local partners Amandla, SAFA and the City of Ekurhuleni to help created sustainable football pitches that with the goal of uniting communities and driving positive outcomes for the people and the planet.
Lay’s RePlay places strong emphasis on including community members and local organisations throughout the planning, the construction and maintenance phases of each pitch, with the goal to develop programming that can address social issues impacting each community, while promoting safe access to the sport.
Former Bafana Bafana and Leeds United Captain and UEFA Foundation for Children Ambassador, Lucas Radebe was proud to be involved in the launching of this global initiative, “The true power of the sport sits in the values such as patience, respect, discipline and determination that it instils, while teaching our youth to come together through teamwork, which I believe is invaluable in empowering communities far beyond the pitch. I’ve already seen the joy it created in the short-term, and I’m excited about the impact it can have on the next generation over time.”
