06 February 2023
Following a successful 2022 season of the DStv Schools Netball Challenge (DSNC), the call to enter this year’s competition is now open.
High Schools can now register to be part of this year’s tournament starting 6 February until the 31st March 2023. The tournament is scheduled to kick off in April and conclude with the national finals taking place from the 21st to the 23rd of July 2023.
The DSNC is a partnership between Multichoice and SA Schools Netball which aims to unearth the next generation of Spar Proteas. It aims to give all High School girls across the country, whether it be in far-flung rural areas, local suburbs, and townships, an equal opportunity to showcase their skills and get to contest in the national finals – a momentous national event that is broadcast live on SuperSport.
The DSNC’s mission is to ensure that all High Schools (urban and rural) have an equal opportunity to reach the national finals and contest for top honours. The competition is divided into two streams, Botho (urban schools) and Ubuntu (rural schools).
Last year’s tournament finals took place at Hoërskool Dr. E.G. Jansen, Boksburg, and saw C&N Sekondêre Meisieskool Oranje lifting the winners’ trophy in the Botho finals. While in the Ubuntu stream, Eastern Cape’s KwaZakhele High School beat the Free State’s Teto Secondary School in a tantalizing final, to solidify themselves as the 2022 winners.
The 2022 edition also served as a scouting ground for universities and national teams’ scouts including the under-21 Baby Proteas as the country prepares to host the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town.
The tournament was a great success in its second season, boasting 1884 registered High Schools and almost doubling its participation rate to over 26 000 girls from all nine South African provinces. All High Schools across the country stand a chance to participate and have until the 31st of March 2023 to register.
“The 2023 Netball World Cup fever is slowly gathering momentum in the country and through the DStv Schools Netball Challenge we want the fever to spread across the entire country and reach areas which normally feel left out from the major happenings in the country. Girls from anywhere in South Africa who dream of one day representing the country in netball must know that they have the DStv Schools Netball Challenge as a springboard to achieving their dreams,” explained MultiChoice’s Executive Head for Corporate Affairs, Tumi Masekela.
This initiative highlights MultiChoice’s commitment to not only giving students in disadvantaged schools greater opportunities but empowering young girls who may not have seen sports as a means to success. Our Here for Her campaign seeks to unearth more female talent as well as build female sports stars, this initiative aims at doing just that.
“Fill your heart with your hopes and dreams; dreams that will someday leap and soar into the sky. 2023 is the year for you to soar.“ enthused SA Schools Netball President Di Woolley.
