On 5 November 2025, the 3 Square Sports Stadium in Alexandra came alive with the sound of whistles, cheering crowds, celebration songs and echoing dreams, as the Discovery Alex Schools League Finals brought another thrilling season to a close. What began as weekly fixtures turned into a powerful showcase of talent, discipline, and unity as 12 primary schools from Alexandra competed in the boys and girls under-13 divisions for ultimate bragging rights.

But beyond the goals, tackles, saves and celebrations, this event represented something much bigger: a platform where youth potential is taken seriously, and where sport becomes a catalyst for wellness, exposure, confidence, and opportunity.

For the young players, the Discovery Alex Schools League isn’t just a once-off tournament – it’s a structured, reputable football ecosystem they proudly belong to.

• Every school gets a fair and equal opportunity
• No walkovers exist – every match is guaranteed
• Fields are booked and prepared professionally
• Young athletes are exposed to real competition formats
• Coaches, teachers, and staff play active mentorship roles

This consistency has given Alexandra’s children something many grassroots systems struggle to guarantee: respect for the game and respect for themselves as young athletes.

As one Forwardzone Colleague, Raymond Marutha, described, “This competition in Alex, it’s similar to the World Cup. The schools want to participate because they’re respected and everything is arranged for them. They know they are here to compete, not just show up.”

While football was the main attraction, the Finals also became a celebration of Alexandra’s unity and local strength. Families, educators, supporters, and neighbourhood leaders filled the stadium to witness the culmination of weeks of commitment and preparation.

Former professional South African footballer Benson Mhlongo stands as a powerful example of what belief, discipline, and opportunity can produce. Having grown up in Alexandra himself, he understands the dreams, challenges, and potential of young people in this community. Today, he returns not just as a role model, but as an ambassador of the Discovery Alex Schools League, using his journey to inspire the next generation to aim higher, work harder, and believe that greatness can begin right here at home.

Alex isn’t just a location – it is a home filled with talent, ambition, resilience, and potential. And on Finals Day, that identity was proudly on display.
